Grade 4 students took the time to pay attention to their feelings and express situations they associate with certain emotions. They were asked to think about their ‘Red Zones’ and their ‘Green Zones’. The students took time to reflect on how they know when they are feeling in the ‘Red’ zone and what they notice happens to their body. Students discussed some of the things that might take them to the ‘Red Zone. They were then asked to compare their state of mind when they are in the ‘Green Zone’. They discussed the differences in their body and mind, particularly paying attention to their emotions, as well as the physical differences.
They were then asked to reflect on things they can do to help them move to the ‘Green Zone’ when they are feeling the ‘Red Zone’. They learnt strategies such as ‘Shark Fin, ‘Mindful Breathing’ and ‘Body Scan’.
Being aware of their ‘Zones’ can help students stay in control of their situation. Here is what some students said when comparing their ‘Red’ and ‘Green’ Zones…..
